The World Health Organization has estimated that about7 million people died from air pollution in 2012 and that, ingeneral one-eighth of all global deaths are linked to airpollution.The pollution has only worsened since.
Of greatest health concern is pollution made up from particulate matter of size 2.5 microns in diameter or less(called “PMs), which is typically, made of mineral dust, black-carbon from agricultural burning, engine exhausts, and primitive indoor cooking.
The biggest problem with PMs is that PM particulates are small enough to bypass the natural filtration provided by nasal hairs and nasal mucus and thereby can enter the lungs ,and in Some cases, even pass into the bloodstream.
As such PMs can damage lung tissues, cause inflammation that can cause or aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
In an attempt to avoid exposure people have resorted to wearing low cost surgical face masks widely available in convenience stores. However, such masks are generally not effective because they are designed to prevent the spreading of germs/ diseases.
N95 masks are pretty costly and users experience breathing resistance while using N95 masks. As most N95 masks available in the market are made by multi filter technology. Also they require straps that loop around the users ears to hold them in place and they substantially block the entire lower portion of the users face causing discomfort.
These mask generally start from Rs.300. These masks are not recommended to use after 1-2 days because of increasing carbon content in the mask due to exhaling of air.
Thus, there is a significant need for a filtration device that can reduce potentially harmful PM. Nasofilters offer a viable solution as it offers convenience, ease of breathing and a user can do all activity like exercise, walking, eating and drinking wearing Nassofilters. A detailed comparison between different pollution masks is shared below.
|Surgical, Medical,||N95 Respirator||Nasofilters|
|Intended use||A surgical mask is used to protect the wearer from large droplets, sprays and splashes of bodily fluids.||
Occupational (including medical) use. Reduces wearer’s exposure to particles including small particle aerosols and large droplets.
Help people stay safe from air pollution, dust, bacterial and pollen Allergy.
|Purpose||Barrier to splash, droplets, and spit.||Protects from exposure to airborne particles.||Protects from exposure to airborne particles.|
|Face Seal Fit||Not designed to fit tight to face.||Designed to fit tight to face creating a seal around the perimeter of the respirator to improve protection.||Designed to fit nose. As 90% of air in body comes through nose.|
|User Seal Check Requirement||Not designed for seal check.||Required each time a respirator is donned.||Not required. As a simple visual inspection tells if the nose is covered.|
|Filtration||Does not effectively filter small particles from air.||Effectively filters large and small particles from air.||Effectively filters large and small particles from air.|
|Leakage||Leakage occurs around the edge of the mask when the user inhales.|| Designed for minimal leakage around edges of the respirator if right size chosen.
In practice users susceptible to lot of leakage due to unawareness about right size and fit.
|No leakage occurs as Nasofilters cover entire face.|
|Use Limitations||One-time use.||Single use. Should be discarded when it becomes damaged or deformed; no longer forms an effective seal to the face; becomes wet or visibly dirty; breathing through it becomes more difficult; or if it becomes contaminated with respiratory or nasal secretions, or other bodily fluids .||One time use possible due to cost efficiency.|
|Available sizes||Generally, only one size.||Available in multiple size configurations. However, sizing is not standardized among approved models.||Standard sizing available on nasofilters.com|
|Protection from PM 2.5||No protection.||Designed to filters out 95% PM 2.5 only if properly fitted.||Filters out more than 90% PM 2.5.|
|Ease of use||Easy to use but provide no protection.||Have resistance to breathing as made from multi-layer filtration.||No breathing resistance as made from single layer nanofibers|
|Starts from Rs.300||Starts from Rs. 10-100||Rs 10|
